Promoting Welsh in the Community

Menter Iaith Maelor

What’s Menter Iaith Maelor?

· A community based venture, which aims to develop the use of the Welsh language in the County of Wrexham.

· An initiative working throughout the county and not just in Wrexham town.

· The Menter is supported by the Welsh Language Board and by Wrexham County Borough Council.

· It demonstrates the educational, personal and social advantages of being bilingual.

Two languages – twice the choice

Why do we need Menter Iaith Maelor?

· Almost 28,000 of the people of Wrexham speak Welsh or have some ability in the language, and a third of them are under 19 years of age.

· 10% of the county’s school children attend Welsh-medium schools – all other pupils learn Welsh as a second language.

· Many organisations function through the medium of Welsh, and the Menter aims to co-ordinate and develop the provision.

What does Menter Iaith Maelor do?

· Provides opportunities for people of all ages to socialise in Welsh.

· Brings organisations together in partnership in order to raise the profile of the Welsh language.

· Encourages public bodies and businesses to make use of Welsh and ensure that more Welsh speakers and learners make use of the service.

· Provides resources and information regarding Welsh medium activities in the County Borough of Wrexham.
